Arm band tattoos have been around for a while, they were one of the more popular tattoos in the 90’s to early 2000’s. I remember days back then of doing 2 or 3 of them per day and thinking that was all i was ever going to do.
Well there were at least a few popular styles back then, ranging from tribal black, to barbwire to intricate dream catchers with leather bands and bone charms.
The arm band tattoo is not as popular as it used to be, but there are still many people getting them yet. Some of them get them because it is what they truly want, some because family member had one.
Some Gangs have used the armband as a military like symbol to express the ranking of the person with the tattoo. Other Russian crime organizations have used barbwire as a tattoo on different parts of the body to show that they Had been and sentenced for a certain period of time.
I am not saying that arm tattoos are a sign of a criminal, such as the Hawaiian culture gets traditional Hawaiian tattoos in an arm band or shoulder tattoo form. These symbols represent certain things from their family history to what they do for a living. Their culture can recognize these symbols like we recognize words and they all tell a story that is not seen or understood by people who not native to the Islands or culture.
Arm bands are a part of the tattoo industries growth and well not always appreciated by the tattoo artist that had to do it, it is loved and cherished by the wearer of the ink. I can assure you that they will stick around, and who knows, maybe the barbwire armband will make a comeback.
